- AI will predict traffic jams 30-40 minutes in advance.
- Traffic signals to auto-adjust; green corridors for ambulances.
- System to detect accidents and manage e-rickshaw parking.
The Road Construction Department has launched an initiative to use technology to tackle traffic congestion and improve traffic management in Patna. A one-day programme on “Management and Solutions to Traffic Jams” was organised at the department’s auditorium on Saturday, where officials and experts discussed ways to modernise the city’s traffic system.
A technical draft of Patna’s traffic management plan, prepared by Arcadis IBI Group, was also presented during the programme. The proposal focuses on using artificial intelligence (AI), data analytics and integrated digital platforms to predict congestion and improve the movement of vehicles across the city.
AI To Predict Traffic Jams 30-40 Minutes In Advance
Under the proposed system, AI will analyse traffic data from different locations to identify patterns and predict potential traffic jams 30 to 40 minutes in advance. Traffic signals and diversions could then be adjusted automatically based on the situation.
The plan also proposes developing a new “intelligence layer” over Patna’s existing Integrated Command and Control Centre, using its infrastructure to process traffic data and anticipate congestion. The technology is expected to make traffic movement more organised while reducing the workload on traffic police.
AI To Detect Accidents, Create Green Corridors For Ambulances
The proposed system will also use AI for automatic accident detection. Once an accident is detected, the nearest ambulance could be alerted immediately, while a green corridor could be created to give it priority through traffic.
The goal is to enable patients to reach hospitals within approximately 10 minutes during emergencies. The proposal also focuses on giving priority to traffic on routes leading to major hospitals, including PMCH, to minimise delays caused by congestion during medical emergencies.
Dak Bungalow, Bailey Road Among Key Congestion Points
The programme examined several major congestion-prone areas in Patna, including Dak Bungalow, Patna Junction Road, GPO Golambar, Exhibition Road, Boring Road, Gandhi Maidan and Ashoka Rajpath. Rising traffic pressure at Saguna Mod, Anisabad and Bailey Road was also discussed.
Officials and experts identified the city’s growing population, increasing number of vehicles, encroachments and violations of traffic rules as major contributors to congestion. Data-driven traffic management plans were proposed to address these issues in key areas.
The proposed system will use geofencing, virtual stands and scheduling to regulate the movement and parking of e-rickshaws and auto-rickshaws. Digital systems could be used to manage their stoppages around railway stations and market areas, where unregulated parking often disrupts traffic.
The plan also proposes using technology to manage passenger movement and sudden traffic surges around Patna Metro stations.
The proposed technology will also be used to identify unauthorised parking and roadside encroachments, helping increase the effective road width and improve the use of available road space.
A digital attendance monitoring system has also been proposed for personnel deployed for traffic management. In addition, the system could identify roads likely to be affected by rain and waterlogging in advance and provide motorists with alternative routes to prevent sudden congestion on major roads.
Road Construction Department Plans Statewide Action
The programme was chaired by Road Construction Department Secretary Pankaj Kumar Pal. Key speakers included PK Sikdar, former Director of CRRI and former Professor at IIT Bombay, and Venkata Chunduru, Country Head of India Operations at Arcadis IBI Group.
The experts presented the technical draft prepared by Arcadis on traffic management in Patna and discussed possible technology-based solutions to reduce congestion.
The Managing Director of BSRDCL, Patna Municipal Commissioner, Superintendent of Traffic Police, Managing Director of Bihar State Bridge Construction Corporation, district administration officials, traffic police personnel and other senior officials attended the programme.
The Road Construction Department aims to prepare a concrete and implementable action plan to reduce traffic congestion in major urban areas of Bihar, including Patna.
