The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Monday launched a major operation against the banned Jamaat-e-Islami Kashmir, carrying out raids in several areas of central and south Kashmir as part of its probe into alleged attempts to revive separatist and anti-national activities in Jammu and Kashmir, jagran.com reported.
NIA teams, assisted by the Jammu and Kashmir Police and paramilitary forces, are conducting simultaneous searches in Srinagar's Lal Bazar area and several locations in South Kashmir's Shopian district. The locations raided include the home of a man in the Mulu Chitragam area of Zainapora in Shopian district.
According to sources cited by jagran.com, the man was allegedly associated with Jamaat-e-Islami and had previously served as the Amir-e-Jamaat of Shopian district. He was also reportedly associated with Jamia Siraj-ul-Uloom Imam Sahib.
Sources also said that the Siraj-ul-Uloom Institute, affiliated with Jamaat-e-Islami, located in the Imam Sahib area of Shopian, was also searched.
According to officials, the raid was part of the NIA's investigation into alleged attempts to revive Jamaat-e-Islami's activities to promote separatism and anti-India propaganda in Jammu and Kashmir.
In February 2024, the central government declared Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir as an 'unlawful association' under Section 3(1) of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), 1967 for the next five years.
According to officials, Jamaat-e-Islami is accused of promoting terrorism, espousing separatist ideology and fueling anti-national activities in Jammu and Kashmir. The raids were ongoing when reports last came in.
