The Supreme Court of India has agreed to entertain the plea filed with a demand to save Kerala-based nurse, Nimisha Priya, from execution in Yemen, which is scheduled to take place on July 16. Priya is to be executed in Yemen’s capital city, Sana, in a murder case.
A bench of Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and Joymalya Bagchi listed the matter for hearing on July 14 after advocate Subhash Chandran KR said diplomatic channels need to be explored.
The Indian government’s effort is complicated as India does not have formal diplomatic relations with the Houthis, who control the area of Yemen in which Nimisha Priya is jailed and is to be executed.
What Is Nimisha Priya's Case
37-year-old Nimisha Priya, who hails from Kollengode, Palakkad, has been convicted in the murder case of a Yemeni business partner, Talal Abdo Mahdi, in July 2017.
According to Human Rights activist Samuel Jerome Baskaran, who has been actively involved in outreach to Yemeni authorities and the victim’s family, the government of India can still make a move to save the Indian national. He said, “The public prosecutor has issued the execution order to prison authorities. The execution is set for July 16," adding that the Government of India can still step in to help save her life.
Nimisha moved to Yemen in 2008 in search of better career opportunities, influenced by the critical financial situation at home and started working in a private hospital in the capital, Sana.
Nimisha entered into a business partnership with Mahdi in 2015 to help her run a clinic, as Yemeni law does not allow outsiders to own such facilities. Later, Mahdi started exploiting Nimisha, confiscating her passport, misappropriating funds, and allegedly abusing her physically, which led to a threat to her freedom of movement.

In July 2017, Nimisha attempted to recover her passport from Mahdi by injecting him with sedatives. But the dosage of sedatives became fatal, leading to the death of Mahdi. Following the incident, Nimisha and her colleague panicked, dismembered Mahdi's body, and attempted to conceal evidence by disposing of the remains in a water tank.
