Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed disappointment over the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) response to Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s act of pulling down a woman doctor’s hijab during an official event in Patna. He remarked that one could expect no better from the party, adding that the incident would have sparked widespread outrage had a Muslim man lifted the veil of a Hindu woman.
"If I had lifted the veil of a Hindu woman in Haryana or Rajasthan, would the BJP say the same?" Omar Abdullah asked on Thursday.
"Had a Muslim man lifted the veil of a Hindu woman, imagine the kind of trouble it would have caused. But because the woman is a Muslim, the BJP is behaving this way. We can expect no more from them," he added.
Earlier, Union Minister Giriraj Singh came out in support of Nitish Kumar said the Bihar CM had done “nothing wrong.” He said that verifying one’s identity in official matters is a similar requirement to voting or employment.
Speaking to the journalists, Singh said, "If someone is going to collect an appointment letter, shouldn’t their face be visible? Is this an Islamic country? Nitish Kumar acted in the role of a guardian. When you go to get a passport, don’t you show your face? When you go to the airport, don’t you show it there as well? People talk about Pakistan and England, this is India, and the rule of law will prevail here. Nitish Kumar did the right thing..."
Speaking to Bharat Samachar, UP minister Sanjay Nishad made headlines with his crude comments over the incident.
"Arey, woh bhi toh aadmi hain na, peeche nahi padna chahiye. Naqab chhoo diya toh itna ho gaya...kahin aur chhoo dete toh kya ho jaata (He is a man being after all. One should not hound him like this. If touching the 'hijab' caused such an uproar, what would have happened if he had touched elsewhere)," the minister had told Bharat Samachar.
