Three assailants ambushed the minor in an isolated place, tied a handkerchief around her face and set her ablaze by pouring inflammable substance on her before fleeing the spot.
The condition of the minor is stable, even though she had sustained a 75 per cent burn during the incident. A special team, featuring specialists from across the departments, was constituted to monitor her health at AIIMS Bhubaneswar.
The police are yet to make an arrest, though a case was lodged at Balanga police station in Puri district.
“We have already recorded the statement of the victim, and the probe is also being conducted based on her statement. The police have recorded statements of several persons, including the victim’s friends and relatives. We have been taking help from technical experts. Our investigation is on the right track,” said the Puri SP, Pinak Mishra.
Police had imposed prohibitory orders outside the burn unit of AIIMS Bhubaneswar, where the victim was receiving treatment, after workers of the BJP, Biju Janata Dal, and Congress clashed outside the unit.
Expressing his rage over the unfortunate incident, former CM Navin Patnaik said that these are not stray cases but are happening regularly. “It has happened just within a week of the terrible incident of a young girl setting herself ablaze in FM College after she was denied justice--even after knocking on every door, and a month after the horrific incident in Gopalpur,” Patnaik added.
In a long X post, Patnaik expressed his concern over the state becoming ‘state becoming unsafe for women’.
