At least two people were killed and seven others injured in a major road accident near Kishanpur Chowk in Jalandhar, Punjab, on Sunday morning after dense fog led to a collision on the Jalandhar-Bhogpur highway. The accident involved a truck and a tractor-trolley carrying passengers, following which both vehicles overturned onto the service road, disrupting traffic for some time.
The deceased have been identified as Parminder Pal, a resident of Arjunbal village in Adampur, and another person whose identity is yet to be ascertained. All the injured were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
According to a report by Jagran.com, the truck, driven by Amritpal Singh of Hawara village in Hoshiarpur, was heading from Jalandhar towards Bhogpur when it reached Kishanpur Chowk. At the same time, a tractor-trolley turning from the Alawalpur side towards Kartarpur collided with the truck. During the impact, a person seated on the trolley fell onto the road.
With visibility severely reduced due to fog, the truck driver reportedly lost control while trying to avoid hitting the fallen person, causing the truck to overturn onto the service road. In the process, a man collecting garbage from a roadside cart was struck by the truck and died on the spot. Another passenger travelling in the tractor-trolley also succumbed to injuries.
The overturned vehicles led to traffic congestion in the area. Following information from local residents, the road safety force reached the spot and secured the area using safety cones. The body trapped under the truck was later recovered, and the Alawalpur police were informed.
Police have sent both bodies for post-mortem examination at the civil hospital, seized the vehicles involved, and initiated an investigation into the incident.
Punjab Weather Update
1. The Chandigarh Meteorological Centre has issued an orange alert for fog in Punjab till January 21, while ruling out the possibility of a cold wave.
2. Over the past 24 hours, the state’s minimum and maximum temperatures have risen by 3.8 Degree Celsius, bringing them closer to normal levels.
3. The lowest minimum temperature was recorded at 0.9 Degree Celsius in Nawanshahr, indicating a slight improvement in night temperatures.
4. Dense fog is likely at some places in Amritsar, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Fatehgarh Sahib and Patiala on January 19 and 20, with dry weather expected on January 20.
5. Light to moderate rain is likely in parts of Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Hoshiarpur and Rupnagar on January 18 and 19.
6. Heavy rain is forecast on January 23 and 24, during which minimum temperatures may rise by 2-4 Degree Celsius, while maximum temperatures are expected to stay between 20°C and 22 Degree Celsius till January 22.
