Punjab Floods: The relentless monsoon rains have led to Punjab witnessing its most severe flood crises in decades, triggered by the overflowing Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi rivers. Incessant rainfall in their catchment areas across Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir and resulting flashfloods have wreaked havoc across all 23 districts in Punjab. According to an official bulletin, from August 1 to September 3, the disaster has claimed 37 lives and impacted over 3.5 lakh residents across the state.
Punjab Floods Top Developments
-The Punjab government has stepped up rescue and relief operations across the state. The District administrations have been directed to maintain round-the-clock vigilance, strengthen river embankments, and ensure safe evacuation from vulnerable areas.
-Gurdaspur, Pathankot, Fazilka, Kapurthala, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Hoshiarpur and Amritsar districts remain the worst-affected districts.
-In view of the ongoing flood situation in Punjab, all schools and colleges will remain closed till September 7 as directed by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann.
-Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh were hit by heavy rains on Wednesday, with IMD issuing fresh warnings. Punjab is expected to see a slight weakening of monsoon activity in the coming days, a red alert has been issued for both North and South Haryana and Chandigarh. Heavy downpour is expected in parts of Rajpura, Dera Bassi, Mohali, Chandigarh, and Kharar in Punjab.

-Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan will be visiting Punjab on Thursday. The Minister is expected to meet farmers in flood-affected areas in Amritsar, Gurdaspur, and Kapurthala districts.
-The Punjab government has begun 'girdawari' (loss assessment) to assess the damage caused by rain and floods, assuring compensation to the farmers.
-Rupnagar district administration in Punjab on Wednesday issued an alert for locals residing along Sutlej river as a large amount of water has been discharged from the Bhakra Dam amid heavy rain in Himachal Pradesh’s catchment area. The discharge is likely to impact villages in the Nangal area.
