Fourteen patients admitted to the civil hospital in Punjab’s Sangrur experienced mild allergic reactions after receiving intravenous (IV) glucose, prompting authorities to withdraw the stock of a particular batch. The Punjab government has suspended its use across Punjab until further testing is completed.

Punjab Principal Secretary (Health) G Kumar Rahul confirmed the incident, stating that all 14 patients, who were admitted to the mother and child ward, were stable. “The circulation of saline has been stopped statewide until the drug is tested. Strict action will be taken if any lapses are found,” he said.

Sangrur MLA Narinder Kaur Bharaj visited the hospital to assess the situation and met with the affected patients and medical staff. “I reached the hospital after learning about the reactions and enquired about their well-being,” she told reporters.

Punjab Health Minister Dr Balbir Singh assured the public that the situation was under control. “Mild reactions were reported today in Sangrur after the use of Glucose IV Fluid. Immediate action has been taken and all stocks have been withdrawn from Punjab,” he stated in a post on X.

Authorities have sent samples for urgent testing and promised strict action if negligence is detected. The health minister urged the public not to panic, highlighting that medical experts are closely monitoring the situation and that patient safety remains the top priority of the state government.
