Rain Alert: After days of relentless heat, North India finally received much-needed relief on Thursday as a powerful western disturbance triggered dust storms, rain, and hail across several states. While the sudden change in weather brought down temperatures, it also caused widespread disruption, damaging infrastructure, affecting crops, causing power cuts, and disrupting normal life in many areas.

The dramatic weather shift was witnessed across Delhi-NCR, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Chhattisgarh. Strong winds, thunderstorms, and showers swept through large parts of the region, ending the intense heatwave-like conditions that had prevailed over the past few days.

Dust Storms Wreak Havoc in NCR, Haryana

In Noida and Ghaziabad, powerful dust storms with wind speeds of up to 80 kmph uprooted hundreds of trees and electricity poles. The severe weather also turned tragic when a construction worker died after an under-construction building collapsed.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert across Uttar Pradesh for June 5, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy rainfall.

In Haryana, strong winds and heavy rain disrupted daily life. Four police personnel were injured after a power pole fell onto the pilot vehicle of Education Minister Mahipal Dhanda's convoy. The IMD has also issued an Orange Alert for the state.

Hailstorms Damage Crops in Punjab, Himachal

Several parts of Punjab witnessed rain and hail accompanied by gusty winds, leading to a noticeable drop in temperatures. The IMD has issued an Orange Alert for June 5.

In Himachal Pradesh, heavy rain and hail battered districts including Shimla, Mandi, and Kangra, causing significant damage to apple orchards and seasonal crops such as tomatoes and peas. Farmers reported losses as the untimely weather struck during a crucial growing period.

Uttarakhand, J&K See Sudden Weather Shift

Strong winds, hail, and rain lashed parts of Uttarakhand, including Dehradun and Mussoorie. The IMD has issued an Orange Alert for five districts in Uttarakhand.

Jammu and Kashmir also witnessed a sudden change in weather conditions. High-speed winds and rainfall affected multiple districts, blowing away tin roofs and damaging fruit-bearing trees. Several areas reported disruption to normal life as gusty winds swept across the region.

Rain Relief in Western UP, Bihar Remains Under Alert

Western Uttar Pradesh experienced cloudy skies, light showers, and strong winds, while central parts of the state, including Lucknow, continued to endure intense heat. According to the IMD, dust storms and light rain are likely to continue in several western and eastern districts until June 7.

In Bihar, northern districts remain under alert for thunderstorms and rain, whereas southern and central regions continue to face oppressive humidity and high temperatures.

Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh Record High-Speed Winds

In Rajasthan, dusty winds continued to sweep across several regions. Sri Ganganagar recorded wind speeds of up to 60 km/h, while Bikaner emerged as the hottest city in the state. The IMD has issued an Orange Alert for June 5.

In Madhya Pradesh, districts including Bhopal, Sheopur, Vidisha, and Harda witnessed heavy rainfall and wind speeds touching 70 km/h. Similar pre-monsoon activity intensified in neighboring Chhattisgarh, where authorities warned of strong winds, lightning, and heavy rain in several districts.

Delhi Weather Disrupts Air Traffic, Flights Diverted

The sudden dust storm and heavy rain over Delhi-NCR also disrupted flight operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport. Poor visibility forced authorities to divert nearly a dozen incoming flights, while several departures were delayed by up to two hours. The IMD has issued a yellow alert till June 7.

Meanwhile, both international and domestic flights were affected. Flights arriving from Bangkok, Phuket, and Muscat were diverted to airports in Lucknow, Jaipur, and Chandigarh.

Domestic flights from Mumbai, Goa, Kolkata, Prayagraj, Jammu, Pune, Purnia, and Amritsar were also unable to land in Delhi and had to be rerouted to nearby airports as adverse weather conditions impacted operations across the region.
