The southwest monsoon arrived in Kerala on Thursday. Normally, the monsoon arrives in Kerala on June 1, but this year it arrived three days late, on June 4. However, the weather system quickly gained momentum upon arrival, covering all of Kerala on its first day while rapidly advancing over other southern states.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), by Friday, it could reach Goa, Tamil Nadu, southern Karnataka, parts of Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh. The forecast stated the monsoon is expected to advance rapidly over much of South India and the Northeast in the next few days.
The IMD had previously predicted the monsoon's arrival date in Kerala as May 26, but its pace slowed due to oceanic disturbances.
Rainfall for the entire season is estimated to be around 90 per cent of normal. The developing El Niño (El Niño) in the Pacific Ocean is considered a major factor. Although the El Niño effect is currently weak, it is expected to strengthen by September.
The arrival of the monsoon in the south, combined with a western disturbance in the north, has created rainy conditions across the country.
Pre-monsoon intensifies in north India
Pre-monsoon activity has intensified in many areas of Delhi-NCR, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra, and is expected to continue for the next two to three days.

Meteorologists believe that if the current pace continues, monsoon rains could begin in several areas of Bengal, Bihar, and Jharkhand by June 15.
The weather department stated that strong winds of up to 50 to 60 kilometers per hour are expected in many parts of North India over the next two to three days. Thunderstorms and rain are also expected, bringing relief from the scorching heat.
On Thursday, several areas of Delhi-NCR were plunged into darkness and heavy rain. In some places, the storm uprooted trees and caused waterlogging on roads. However, people also found relief in the form of a drop in temperatures.
Kerala receives showers
In Kerala, a warning has been issued for heavy to very heavy rainfall at many places in the state over the next seven days. Heavy rain is also possible at some places in Tamil Nadu. Water levels in rivers and reservoirs are expected to rise in many parts of South India.
Northeast India
Rainfall will continue in Northeast India. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura over the next five to six days. Active weather will also remain over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
