Amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, several border states have implemented stringent security measures. Schools and colleges have been closed and all leave for police forces and administrative personnel has been cancelled.
These actions have been enforced by Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat and West Bengal following India’s targeted strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The strikes, conducted under Operation Sindoor, were a retaliation for the April 22 massacre in Pahalgam, which claimed 26 lives.
In Punjab, the leave of all police personnel has been cancelled and the state government has ordered the closure of all schools in six border districts. Schools will remain shut in Ferozepur, Pathankot, Fazilka, Amritsar, Gurdaspur and Tarn Taran until further notice.
“Leaves should be granted only in special circumstances with the approval of the competent authority,” PTI reported citing an order by the DGP office.
Punjab’s Gurdaspur will witness an eight-hour blackout starting at 9 pm. “Punjab shares a 532-km border with Pakistan. Therefore, the role of the Punjab government becomes extremely crucial during any military tension. All districts near the border have been placed on high alert,” Punjab Minister Aman Arora said.
The Rajasthan government cancelled leaves for administrative and police personnel posted near the International Border. As a precaution, schools have also been shut in five districts — Sri Ganganagar, Bikaner, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Barmer.
In Haryana, all leave for state police personnel and health department staff has been suspended until further notice. Similarly, the Delhi government has revoked the leave of all its employees in response to the escalating tensions.
Besides, flight operations continue to remain suspended in several districts close to the border. Security has been heightened in sensitive areas.
