The Aam Aadmi Party, embroiled in many controversies, has announced its Rajya Sabha nominations for the upcoming elections to the upper house of the Parliament on January 19. The AAP Political Affairs Committee has decided to continue with Sanjay Singh and ND Gupta for their respective second terms as Rajya Sabha members. The PAC meanwhile has also nominated Delhi Commission For Women Chairperson Swati Maliwal for the first time.

With the six-year term of three Rajya Sabha MPs from Delhi ending this month, voting to elect the new members will take place on January 19. The three members - Sanjay Singh, Sushil Kumar Gupta and Narain Dass Gupta - will be retiring on January 27.

It is expected that Swati Maliwal will replace Sushil Kumar Gupta, who has reportedly told the party top brass that he wants to fully engage in the electoral politics of Haryana, where elections will be held later this year. AAP is planning to contest the Haryana Assembly Elections on its own.

"Chaired by AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal, the committee decided to endorse two existing members for re-nomination, whereas Sushil Kumar Gupta expressed his intent to redirect his focus towards the electoral politics of Haryana," the party said.

Meanwhile, the AAP has renominated its party leader in Rajya Sabha Sanjay Singh, who is lodged in Tihar jail after his arrest by ED in October last year over his alleged involvement in the Delhi Liquor Policy Scam case. Singh's renomination came after a Delhi court allowed him to sign forms and documents for his Rajya Sabha renomination.

Special Judge M K Nagpal passed the order on an application filed by Singh, who submitted that his present term as a member of the Rajya Sabha is expiring on January 27 and the Returning Officer has issued a notice on January 2 for the conduct of the election and nominations for the same are to be submitted by January 9.
