Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov backed for permanent representation of India, Brazil and African nations in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to ensure the global majority is fairly represented. Russian FM Sergey Lavrov made these remarks in an interview with aif.ru, as reported by the state-owned TASS news agency on Sunday.
According to Sergey Lavrov, the inclusion of these countries as permanent members is long overdue. "Countries such as India, Brazil, as well as representatives of Africa should have been permanently in the Security Council for a long time. This is necessary to ensure representativeness, representation of the global majority," he stated.
Sergey Lavrov's stance aligns with growing international calls for UNSC reform. Last month, during the UN General Assembly's high-level meeting, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed strong support for India, along with Brazil, Japan, Germany and permanent African representation, to be included as permanent members of a reformed Security Council.
