BJP MP Nishikant Dubey who levelled the ‘cash-for-query’ allegation against TMC leader Mahua Moitra on Saturday reacted to her expulsion from the Lok Sabha and said that it was not a happy day for him and gave him pain as an MP got expelled over corruption and issue of national security.

“The expulsion of a parliamentarian for corruption and on the issue of national security gives me pain. Yesterday, it was not a happy day, but a sad day,” Nishikant told news agency ANI.

This was Dubey’s first reaction following Moitra’s expulsion as he refused to comment on the issue on Friday. He was the first legislator to complain against the TMC leader and has been constantly pursuing the case.

Mahua Moitra, 49, was expelled from the Lok Sabha on Friday after the parliamentary Ethics Committee found her guilty of taking bribes in exchange for asking questions critical of the ruling government and the Adani group.

Parliamentary affairs minister Pralhad Joshi moved a motion to expel the TMC leader for ‘unethical conduct’, and it was adopted by a voice note. Moitra, known for his fiery speech against the Modi government, is accused of sharing her Parliament account credentials and accepting gifts from businessman Darshan Hiranandani in exchange for asking questions in Lok Sabha to target the Adani Group.

Initially, Supreme Court lawyer Jai Anant Dehadrai filed a complaint with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on October 14, alleging corruption and money laundering. However, Moitra dismissed the allegations but Dubey requested Lok  Sabha speaker Om Birla to suspend her for taking bribes. Later, Hiranandani also confirmed the charges levelled against the TMC MP in the “cash for query” row.

Following her expulsion from the Lok Sabha on Friday, Moitra read out her statement outside the House and accused the parliamentary ethics committee of ‘breaking every rule’.  Several opposition leaders also staged a walk out in her support.

"If this Modi government thought that by shutting me up they could do away with the Adani issue, let me tell you this that this kangaroo court has only shown to all of India that the haste and the abuse of due process you have used demonstrates how important Adani is to you. And to what length you will go to harass a single woman MP into shutting her into submission,” Moitra said, as quoted by ANI.
