Comedian Samay Raina’s show, India’s Got Latent, has been at the centre of controversy following a contestant’s insensitive joke about Deepika Padukone’s mental health. Raina, who is also a judge on the show, faced backlash for his nonchalant response to the joke. The situation escalated when the same contestant, Bunty Banerjee, made light of another serious issue, the recent rape and murder case of a trainee doctor in Kolkata.

Banerjee’s comments came during her performance, where she joked about the heinous crime that sparked nationwide protests demanding justice. In a now-viral video, she stated, “Whenever there’s a tense situation, the Bengali in me sleeps and the Bihari wakes up.” This comment was met with laughter from the audience and judges, including Raina, comedian Tanmay Bhat, producer-actor Raghu Ram, neurologist Dr Sid Warrier and Habitat owner Balraj Singh.

Continuing her routine, Banerjee asked the audience, “Any Bengalis in the house?” She then added, “See, sab so rahe hain. Nahi. Thak gaye honge na candle march karte karte,” implying that Bengalis were tired from participating in candlelight march. This flippant remark drew laughter from the panel but sparked outrage online.

Social media users quickly condemned Banerjee for her insensitivity, with many expressing their disappointment with her statement and judges reaction. One user shared the video on X, questioning, " Are the judges laughing with her? Or laughing at her?" Another commented, "It's not called cooking; it's called being a woke person who just wants to go with the flow. The same candle march that the Bengalis do is for protecting women. If something happens to her, we will be the ones rising to protest for her justice."

Critics continued to voice their opinions, with one saying, “Oh God! Bless Indians with a good sense of humour and hygiene. Enough of this torture.” Another user noted, “This lady, claiming to be a comedian, mocks depression and ridicules Bengalis for holding candlelight marches. It’s appalling that such behaviour is applauded.”

One states, "Shame on her,she deserves a tight slap for mocking sensitive issues like rape n mental health.arre at least ppl in Bengal came together and fought against this heinous crime n still seeking for justice.haven't seen this kind of huge protest in other states."
