The violence in Sambhal occurred on November 24 during the second phase of a government-ordered survey at the Shahi Jama Masjid, following a court directive. The survey was part of an investigation into claims that the mosque was built by Mughal emperor Babur after demolishing a Hindu temple. The unrest resulted in the deaths of four people, while dozens, including police and administrative officials, were injured.

The court had ordered the survey in response to a plea asserting that the mosque had been constructed by Babur after destroying a temple. The violence erupted when a mob threw stones at the police and the survey team, leading to 4 tragic casualties and widespread injuries.
