Sandip Ghosh, the erstwhile principal during whose tenure a female doctor was allegedly raped and murdered at the government-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital last month, moved the Supreme Court on Wednesday, challenging the Calcutta High Court order after which the CBI took over from a state-constituted Special Investigation Team (SIT) a probe into alleged financial irregularities at the Kolkata-based institution.

He was arrested by the central agency as part of the investigation on Monday. Ghosh's plea has been listed for hearing on September 6 before a bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud. On Tuesday, citing the ongoing criminal investigation against him, the West Bengal Health Department suspended Ghosh hours after a Kolkata court remanded him to an eight-day CBI custody.

Though he was initially under the CBI's radar for any possible involvement in the alleged rape and murder, the noose around Ghosh tightened when the probe agency took over the corruption case that stems from complaints lodged by Akhtar Ali, the doctor who served as the deputy superintendent of RGKMCH at the time of the alleged rape and murder.

In his complaints, Ali alleged several counts of financial irregularities at the medical college during Ghosh's tenure as the principal there. On August 23, the Calcutta High Court transferred the anti-corruption probe to CBI. He was arrested after a marathon round of questioning spanning two weeks.
