The Supreme Court expressed shock over the suspension and arrest of the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) HM Jayram on Wednesday. Jayram, a senior IPS officer, was arrested on Monday in connection with an abduction case, following the Madras High Court decision. ADGP Jayram approached the Supreme Court on Tuesday, seeking a stay on his arrest order by the Madras High Court. The Apex Court agreed to hear the case on Wednesday.
Hearing the case, a bench of Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and Manmohan observed, “He is a senior police officer. Where was the requirement for you to put him under suspension? These kinds of orders are shocking and demoralising.”
Jayaram's counsel informed the apex court that the officer was taken into custody on Tuesday and released by 5 pm in the evening. However, the state government ordered the suspension of the police official. The Supreme Court directed the government counsel to inform the court by Thursday on the revocation of Jayaram's suspension.
Representing Jayaram, advocate Rajesh Singh Chauhan said the Madras High Court's arrest order was "based on a confessional statement" of two accused persons and did not state "detailed reasons".
Why Was Tamil Nadu Police Official Arrested?
ADGP Jayram was arrested for allegedly abetting the abduction of a minor boy. He was accused of letting a group of people use his vehicle to abduct the brother of man who had married a woman of a different caste. The kidnapping was aimed at forcibly separating the inter-caste couple.
The Madras High Court directed the police officials to arrest Jayram on Monday, citing, “A strong message should go out to the public that no one is above the law.” Jayram was questioned for nearly six hours at the Thiruvalangadu police station. Following the arrest of the IPS officer, the Tamil Nadu government issued his suspension order on Tuesday.
The complaint was filed by a woman named Lakshmi, whose elder son, Dhanush, has married a woman from another caste without the consent of his family. After the couple went into hiding, a group of people, allegedly led by the woman’s family, entered Lakshmi's house on May 10 and abducted her son. The ADGP Jayram was arrested for abetting the abduction of the minor boy by allowing Lakshmi’s son to be transported in his vehicle.

A few days later, the minor boy was found near a hotel with injuries, Lakshmi stated. The woman’s father, a lawyer and now dismissed policewoman, was arrested in this case among the five accused. They also included MLA and ADGP Jayram in their statement. Jayram has been arrested and suspended following the Madras High Court order, which came during the hearing bail plea filed by KV Kuppam MLA and Puratchi Bharatham Katchi leader “Poovai” M Jagan Moorthy.
