South Mumbai is set to join the metro network in March with the much-awaited launch of Metro Line 3. The fully underground corridor will run 22 km from Aarey to Worli Naka (Acharya Atre Chowk), providing a seamless and efficient travel option for commuters.

Metro Line 3 will offer a cost-effective alternative to road transport, with fares ranging from Rs 10 to Rs 60. The metro aims to significantly ease traffic congestion by providing a reliable mode of transport, allowing commuters to avoid crowded roads like Dr Annie Besant Road and Lady Jamshedji Road.

Direct Connectivity to Business Hubs

The new metro line will improve accessibility to key commercial areas such as Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), Worli, and Dadar. This direct connection will reduce dependence on local trains and cabs, making daily commutes faster and more convenient.

Tunnelling Under the Mithi River

One of the most complex sections of Metro Line 3 is the 1.8 km stretch between BKC and Dharavi, where a 1.2 km segment runs directly beneath the Mithi River. To tackle this challenge, advanced tunnel boring machines (TBMs) and hydrophilic gaskets were used to maintain structural integrity in water-logged conditions.

Expected Surge in Ridership with Phase II

Since the launch of Phase I (Aarey to BKC), Metro Line 3 has recorded an average daily ridership of 25,000. With the extension reaching densely populated areas, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) anticipates a significant increase in metro usage.

Building the Acharya Atre Chowk station at a high-traffic intersection required careful planning and major civic utility support. To enhance operational efficiency, crossover points have been introduced at Worli and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), improving train reversals and service frequency.

Metro Line 3 is expected to revolutionise urban mobility in Mumbai by easing congestion, reducing travel time, and offering a comfortable commuting experience. As South Mumbai gears up to join the metro map, the city is one step closer to a more efficient and modern public transport system.
