A tragic stampede broke out at Andhra Pradesh's Sri Venkateshwara Swamy Temple in Srikakulam on Saturday, leaving at least 9 devotees dead and others injured.

The authorities rushed to the site son after the information was received. The injured were taken to the hospital. The police department have deployed additional force at the spot.

Reacting to the tragedy, Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu said, "The stampede incident at the Venkateswara Temple in Kasibugga in Srikakulam district has caused a shock. The death of devotees in this tragic incident is extremely heartbreaking... I have instructed the officials to provide speedy and proper treatment to those who have been injured..."

State Agriculture Minister K Atchannaidu also reached the accident site immediately and spoke with the temple authorities to gather details about the incident.

Kasibugga sub-division in-charge DSP Lakshman Rao said, "The stampede occurred at Venkateswara temple in Kasibugga at around 11.30 am, and "Seven persons died and two others were injured." 

What led to stampede?

According to the statement issued by the Chief Minister's office (CMO), a huge crowd gathered at the temple on the occasion of Ekadashi which triggered a heavy rush of devotees. The overcrowding at the premises led to a sudden stampede at the temple.

"A stampede took place at the Venkateswara Swamy temple in Kasibugga, Srikakulam district, leaving several people injured. The incident occurred as a large crowd gathered at the temple on the occasion of Ekadashi. The heavy rush of devotees led to overcrowding, resulting in a sudden stampede. The injured were immediately shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment. Police rushed to the spot. State Agriculture Minister K. Atchannaidu rushed to the accident site immediately. He spoke with the temple authorities to gather details about the incident. Additional police forces have been deployed to the spot," the CMO said.
