The Supreme Court has directed the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to examine the possibility of introducing clear warnings or information on the front of packaged food products that contain high levels of sugar, salt and saturated fat. The direction came in response to a proposal seeking the implementation of Front-of-Pack (FoP) labelling, a simplified, evidence-based nutrition system displayed prominently on packaging to enable consumers to quickly assess the health impact of products and make informed purchasing choices.

What Does ‘Front-of-Pack’ Labelling Mean?
The term ‘front-of-pack’ labelling refers to a rule requiring food manufacturers to clearly display key nutritional details, such as sugar, salt, and fat content, on the front side of packaged products. At present, this information is usually printed in tiny fonts on the back, making it easy to miss.
Key Details Visible Instantly
Under this system, consumers can check vital nutritional information at a quick glance. There will be no need to flip the packet over or struggle to read fine print. Clear front-facing labels will make it easier to judge whether a product fits into a healthy diet before buying it.
Encouraging Healthier Choices
When shoppers are fully aware of how much sugar, salt, and fat they are consuming, they are more likely to make informed decisions. Better awareness can help lower the chances of lifestyle diseases such as obesity and heart-related ailments.
