The Supreme Court on Monday, December 1, refused to extend the last date, December 6 for the mandatory registration of all waqf properties, including ‘waqf by user’ under the UMEED portal. Earlier, the petitioners had claimed that they were unable to upload their details regarding the Waqf properties on the portal due to a technical glitch. Some petitioners also said that they were unable to find the caretakers of their Waqf properties, who had to update the details on the website.

In response to that, a bench comprising Justices Dipankar Datta and Augustine George Masih asked the petitioners to approach the respective tribunals before the deadline. "Our attention has been drawn to the proviso to Section 3B. Since the remedy before the tribunal is available before the applicants, we dispose of all the applications by granting them liberty to approach the tribunal by the last date of the six-month period," the bench said.

The bench added that petitioners can also approach the Waqf tribunal to address their grievances. In this regard, the bench said, “Approach the tribunal. Let them decide on a case-by-case basis. We can’t rewrite the Waqf Act. The statute already provides a remedy. Avail it. Why should we interfere?"

Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, representing the side of the petitioners, argued that the six-month period given by the court is very less due to the unavailability of the necessary details. “We don’t know who the Waqif is for Waqfs of 100, 125 years old. Without these details, the portal won’t accept.”

The Centre launched the Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development (UMEED) Act on June 6, 2025, to create a digital inventory and geo-tag all waqf properties.

According to the government mandate, details of the waqf properties have to be uploaded on the portal by the users within six months. Through this platform, the government plans to streamline the waqf properties in the country into one central database.
