The Supreme Court said on Wednesday that it will hear a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking an investigation into the terror incident in Pahalgam on May 1. The plea demands that the investigation be led by a retired judge.
A Kashmir resident, Mohammad Junaid, along with Fatesh Kumar Sahu and Vicky Kumar, filed a petition, which also asks the Supreme Court to order the central government and the Union Territory administration to protect the safety of visitors in the area.
The case has been listed before a bench of Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh.
The attack claimed the lives of 26 people, mainly tourists.
The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) met a day after the terror attack in Pahalgam. During the briefing to the CCS, the cross-border connections of the terrorist attack were highlighted. This incident was seen to have occurred after Jammu and Kashmir's elections were successfully held and the region made steady progress toward economic development and growth.
India has closed the Integrated Check Post at Attari and suspended the Indus Water Treaty as part of a series of actions against Pakistan for its support of cross-border terrorism.
The country also decided to reduce the number of High Commissions. In reaction to the Pahalgam terror assault, the government has granted the armed forces total operational freedom.
India and Pakistan's Directors General of Military Operations spoke on the hotline earlier in the day over Pakistan's unprovoked ceasefire breaches, said defence sources, as cited by IndiaTV on Wednesday.
They stated India has cautioned Pakistan about the Pakistan Army's unjustified ceasefire breaches along the Line of Control (LOC) and the International Border.
The Indian Army has efficiently retaliated to Pakistan's unprovoked small weapons fire across the Line of Control (LoC).
