Soon after being sworn in as the ninth Chief Minister of West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari delivered a strong message indicating a tone shift. He stopped supporters chanting "Jai Shri Ram" at Jorasanko Thakurbari, the ancestral home of Rabindranath Tagore, saying that as Chief Minister, he now belongs to everyone.
Immediately after the swearing-in ceremony at the Brigade Parade Ground, the Chief Minister headed straight to Jorasanko. There, he paid tribute to Rabindranath Tagore on his 166th birth anniversary. He said, "This is not the time for political bickering. We have huge responsibilities ahead of us. Those who want to engage in politics can continue, but we will move forward."
While the Chief Minister was speaking to the media at the Thakurbari complex, the crowd began chanting "Jai Shri Ram." Chief Minister Suvendu immediately responded, telling his supporters to stop chanting, saying, "This is not the place to chant 'Jai Shri Ram,' and that only the name of the poet should be mentioned here."
The Chief Minister, avoiding controversy, said his goal now is the development of all of Bengal. He insisted, "I will not make any controversial comments. I am the Chief Minister, and now I belong to everyone. Bengal has already suffered a lot. Education and culture have been destroyed. Let us rebuild Bengal together."
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has formed its government for the first time in West Bengal after ending the 15-year rule of the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC). Suvendu Adhikari, who defeated Banerjee in Bhabanipur, took oath as the chief minister on Saturday. Several prominent BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, party president Nitin Nabin, and UP CM Yogi Adityanath, remained present at this historic moment for the party.
