Swiggy Platform Fee Hike: Now ordering food online may get a little expensive. Just days after Zomato increased its platform fees, Swiggy has also taken a similar step, increasing the fees customers have to pay on every order. Swiggy has increased its platform fee to Rs 17.58 per order (including GST), which was earlier Rs 14.99. This is an increase of about 17 per cent. Amid this news, Swiggy's shares jumped 2.90 per cent to Rs 280.40.

Why Did Swiggy Increase Its Fee?

Swiggy has informed users that this increased fee will help it operate and maintain the Swiggy platform. This message from the company is now visible during checkout on the app.

How Much Did Zomato Increase Fee?

Swiggy's change comes shortly after Zomato increased its platform fees. The company increased its per-order fee by Rs 2.40, taking the pre-GST fee from Rs 12.50 to Rs 14.90. The fees for both platforms are now the same.

After adding taxes, both Swiggy and Zomato now charge roughly the same fees. This continues a long-standing trend where these two rivals mimic each other's fee-setting strategies. If one platform increases fees, the other does too.

What Is Platform Fee?

Platform fees are charges for using a company's platform. Platform fees are a small but significant part of a food delivery bill. While these fees may seem insignificant in isolation, frequent users can end up paying significantly more over time. Companies often justify these fees by claiming they are necessary to cover technology costs, app maintenance, and overall operational expenses.

The fee hike will have a direct impact on consumers, as ordering food via Zomato will now cost you more. The price hike has been announced at a time when eateries and restaurant owners have increased prices due to non-availability of commercial LPG cylinders and rising costs of other essential ingredients on the back of supply constraints amid the Middle East war crisis.
