Tamil Nadu Weather: A new low-pressure system forming off the Sri Lankan coast is expected to trigger a renewed spell of strong Northeast monsoon rainfall across Tamil Nadu from Sunday. Weather officials said the initial impact would be felt in the delta districts, followed by widespread rain over the coastal stretch and nearby regions from Monday.

Chennai and neighbouring districts are also likely to experience heavy showers on Monday and Tuesday. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, has placed four districts, including Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam as well as Karaikal under an orange alert for Sunday, indicating the possibility of very heavy rainfall of 12–20 cm. Another set of districts, such as Ramanathapuram and Sivagangai, may receive heavy rain.

The system originated from an upper-air cyclonic circulation seen on Friday, which strengthened into a low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal on Saturday. According to the RMC, this development will help revive the monsoon phase, which had remained subdued in recent days.

Chennai Weather Forecast

Chennai may see light to moderate showers in parts of the city on Sunday. Since October 1, the State has recorded nearly 26 cm of rainfall, close to the seasonal average of 28 cm. With the monsoon expected to intensify again, officials anticipate an increase in the rainfall tally.

On Monday, several coastal districts and isolated interior areas are expected to get light to moderate rain. An orange alert has been issued for six districts, including Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram and Tirunelveli. Heavy rainfall is also forecast for nine districts, among them Chennai, Tiruvallur, Thanjavur and Karaikal.

The RMC said intense rainfall may continue over northern districts, including Chennai and Villupuram and Puducherry on Tuesday. On November 19, heavy rain is expected mainly over the Nilgiris and the ghat regions of Coimbatore, while scattered rainfall may persist statewide until November 21.

The IMD’s extended outlook indicates another potential low-pressure area forming over the Bay of Bengal around November 21, further improving rainfall prospects for the second half of the month.
