Tamil Nadu Weather Update: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall across several districts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal over the next few days. Continuous rain accompanied by thunder and lightning has caused waterlogging in parts of Thoothukudi, while the Nambiar River has swollen due to runoff from the Western Ghats.

In view of the heavy downpour, the Thoothukudi District Administration has declared a holiday for schools on Thursday. According to the IMD, districts including Theni, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, and Ramanathapuram are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, with several areas recording more than 100 mm of rain. Thiruchendur in Thoothukudi registered the highest rainfall at 146 mm.
Additionally, a yellow alert has been issued for Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi, Chennai, Madurai, Sivaganga, Dindigul, Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Nilgiris, and Erode, indicating the likelihood of heavy rain in these regions.

In a tweet on X on Wednesday, Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said, "Light to Moderate Rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Chengalpattu, Chennai, Kancheepuram, Kanyakumari, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thenkasi, Tiruvallur, Tiruvarur, Tirunelveli, Karaikal in next 3 hours."
Chennai Weather Update
Chennai is witnessing moderate rainfall today, October 16, 2025, with temperatures between 25.7 and 30.6 Degree Celsius. The city’s air quality was good yesterday, with an AQI-IN of 50. Today’s forecast predicts up to 16.97 mm of rain, 78 percent humidity, and winds blowing at 18.7 kph, with a 92 percent chance of precipitation.
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) forecasts that 16 districts, including Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Theni, Tiruppur, Erode, Dharmapuri, Salem, and Madurai, will experience heavy showers until October 19.
Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea, as squally winds are expected to reach speeds of 35-45 km/h, gusting up to 55 km/h in deeper waters.
The IMD has said that conditions are favourable for the complete withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from the remaining parts of India within the next few days. At the same time, the onset of the northeast monsoon has begun over southern peninsular India, with cyclonic circulations over coastal Tamil Nadu, the Comorin area, and the southeast Arabian Sea likely to intensify rainfall in the coming days.
