Tamil Nadu Weather: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Alert for seven districts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, due to the possibility of heavy rainfall at isolated places on Saturday, January 24.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, the weather activity is being driven by a lower atmospheric circulation prevailing over southern India. This system is expected to influence weather conditions across the state over the next few days.

Tamil Nadu Weather: Districts Under Yellow Alert

The IMD has warned of isolated heavy rainfall in the following districts:

  • Chennai

  • Chengalpattu

  • Kanchipuram

  • Tiruvallur

  • Tiruvannamalai

  • Villupuram

  • Cuddalore

Light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunder and lightning, is likely in parts of coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal. Similar conditions may also occur at one or two locations in interior Tamil Nadu between January 24 and January 29.

Tamil Nadu Weather: Fishermen Asked To Stay Ashore

The weather department has also issued a marine warning due to rough sea conditions. Strong winds reaching speeds of up to 60 kmph are expected over:

  • Tamil Nadu coast

  • Gulf of Mannar

  • Comorin Sea

These conditions are likely to prevail on January 24 and 25. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea during this period.

Weather System Update

The IMD said a deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal weakened into a depression early on Saturday. By afternoon, the system further weakened into a low-pressure area after crossing the north Sri Lanka coast between Trincomalee and Jaffna.

The weakened system is expected to move westwards and gradually dissipate. However, its residual effect, combined with existing atmospheric conditions, is likely to continue triggering rainfall over parts of Tamil Nadu during the weekend.

Advisory For Residents

Authorities have advised people to remain cautious, especially those living in low-lying and waterlogged areas. Residents have also been urged to follow official weather updates and safety instructions issued by local administrations and disaster management agencies.
