An Indian student has reportedly been shot dead by unidentified assailants in a suspected robbery bid in Wisconsin, United States. The 26-year-old victim, a resident of Telangana’s Ranga Reddy district, had gone to the US for higher studies. He was along doing a part-time job at a store in Milwaukee.

The US authorities have apprised the deceased’s family about the incident, asserting that the exact cause of death will be determined after an autopsy.

Parents of the victims, identified as Gamba Praveen, are in a state of shock over the incident. Praveen’s cousin, Arun, mentioned that Praveen had attempted to call his father in the early hours of Wednesday, but the call was missed as his father was asleep.

“Later in the morning, I saw the missed call and sent him a voice message. However, even after an hour, there was no call back. I then called back his number, but someone else answered. I grew suspicious and ended the call, wondering if something had happened,” India Today quoted Praveen’s father Raghavulu.

“When I contacted his friends, they told me they had received information that he had gone to a store for a part-time job, and during a robbery, the robbers opened fire. A bullet hit him and he died,” he added.

The Consulate General of India in Chicago expressed anguish over the incident, adding that contact has been made with Praveen’s family and all possible support will be extended.

"We are saddened by the untimely death of Praveen Kumar Gampa, a Post-graduate student at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The Consulate is in contact with Praveen's family and the University, helping them with all possible support. Our heartfelt condolences and prayers are with his family and friends of the departed," they wrote in a post on X.
