Following the crushing defeat in the Bengal Assembly election 2026, the internal crisis within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) appears to worsen. Political circles are buzzing that several TMC MPs in the Lok Sabha are in contact with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and a large group of them may leave the party.

According to sources cited by jagran.com, about 12 of the 29 Trinamool MPs in the Lok Sabha have already planned to join or support the BJP. Discussions are also underway with five or six other MPs.

Support Of 20 MPs Necessary To Avoid Anti-Defection Law

As per jagran.com, a strategy is being made to bring together at least 19-20 MPs to avoid the anti-defection law.

Sources claim that the Trinamool leadership has been alerted of this possible split and efforts have begun to keep the party united.

Some MPs considered close to former Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee and her nephew and party national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee are among those who might switch. This is considered politically significant for the BJP.

The BJP currently has 240 MPs in the Lok Sabha, and the government is running with the support of allies. If a large number of Trinamool MPs join the BJP, the party's strength will increase further and its dependence on allies will decrease.

BJP Eyes TMC MPs In Rajya Sabha

According to sources, after the Lok Sabha elections, the BJP is also eyeing Trinamool Congress MPs in the Rajya Sabha. There is also talk of dissatisfaction within the TMC regarding the role and organisational style of the IPAC. However, these claims have not yet been officially confirmed by either party.
