Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay’s aide and party functionary Nirmal Kumar has been arrested and remanded in judicial custody for two weeks following alleged derogatory remarks that he made targeting a Madras High Court judge over orders and statements involving the Karur stampede that killed 41 people.
"Yes, we have arrested and got him under remand. Investigation is going on,” a senior police officer told NDTV.
TVK’s Nirmal Kumar had allegedly posted a photograph accompanied by derogatory remarks on social media, targeting the Judge's observations regarding the tragedy, investigators stated as per NDTV.
The Madras High Court had recently slammed the actor-turned-politician Vijay and the other top leaders of TVK over the stampede in Karur. The court criticised Vijay's party members for fleeing from the scene immediately after the stampede broke out, adding that the party did not care for the supporters.
Justice N Senthilkumar observed that TVK leaders should have taken necessary steps to tackle the situation. However, the court also expressed dissatisfaction over the investigation by the state government.
It ordered the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Asra Garg, and has directed the state government to cooperate. Justice N Senthilkumar observed that the TVK leaders should not have left the scene just after the stampede, adding that they put no efforts to control the situation.
