Delhi UER-2 Opening Date: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate Delhi’s long-awaited Urban Extension Road-2 (UER-2) and the Delhi stretch of the Dwarka Expressway on August 16. The six-lane expressway, designed as the city’s third Outer Ring Road, will cut travel time from Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport to Kundli to just 20 minutes and significantly ease connectivity to south-west and north-west Delhi.

UER-2: Operational Sections

The expressway, stretching 76km with 54.21km in Delhi and 21.5km in Haryana, is almost complete. Sections passing through Najafgarh, Mundka and Alipur are already operational. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), which is overseeing construction, recently briefed Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on the project’s progress.

UER-2 was initially planned under the Delhi Master Plan Road 2021 and later designated as a national highway. It was built in five construction packages at an estimated cost of Rs 8,000 crore, funded by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) for the Delhi stretch.

UER-2 Expressway To Provide Direct Link Between THESE Cities

The expressway will provide a direct link between NCR cities including Sonipat, Panipat, Karnal, Ambala, Rohtak, Jind, and Bahadurgarh, while also improving connectivity to the airport and major highways such as NH-48. Commuters from Noida will no longer need to travel through central Delhi via Ashram Chowk or Dhaula Kuan to reach IGI Airport. Instead, the new road connects directly to the Dwarka Expressway, saving significant travel time.

UER-2 To Boost Real Estate

The UER-2 is expected to boost real estate and business activity in areas such as Kundli on the periphery of Gurgaon. The Times Property cited Akshay Taneja, CEO of TDI Infrastructure as stating that, the expressway could reduce airport travel from Kundli from nearly two hours to just 20 minutes. Improved accessibility is likely to accelerate housing demand, commercial developments, and logistics operations in the region.

The project has also focused on sustainability, with NHAI using two million tonnes of legacy waste from the Ghazipur landfill during construction. This move reduced the landfill’s height by seven metres, showcasing a responsible approach to urban infrastructure.
