As the Uttar Pradesh government gears up to transform the Ganga Expressway into a 'green corridor', the state is executing a massive plantation drive across a total stretch of 594 km of the Ganga Expressway. Under this drive, over 5.5 lakh trees are to be planted on either side of the expressway to develop it into an eco-friendly transportation corridor rather than just a highway.
This plantation drive for the Ganga Expressway is also a part of the larger monsoon campaign by the state, which will have a mammoth task of planting 35 crore saplings in a day, with several zones allocated for plantation on a massive scale.

Plantation across the Ganga Expressway segment will be done on approximately 500 hectares along the side of the highway. The state is also looking to plant several native and environment-important trees such as Peepal, Banyan, Neem, Jamun, Mango, Mahua, Sheesham, Arjun and Gulmohar across the Expressway to enhance its biodiversity and ecological health.
Furthermore, 'Harishankari' clusters, composed of a combination of Peepal, Banyan and Pakad, which carry ecological as well as cultural importance, are to be planted at regular intervals on the Ganga Expressway. For protection and sustainable plantation, wire fencing and drip irrigation facilities are also expected to be installed.
However, this isn't all, as other highway corridors across the state will also be developed with massive green belts. More than 11,000 hectares of plantation are planned across more than 2,000 locations on other highways as part of the state's future plantation plans.
