A man killed his four children by slitting their throats before taking his own life in Manipur Chachari village in Shahjahapur, Uttar Pradesh, reported news agency PTI, citing an officer. Superintendent of Police Rajesh Dwivedi said on Thursday that 36 year 36-year-old Rajiv Kumar killed his three daughters, Smriti, 12, Kirti, 9, Pragati, 7, and his five-year-old son Rishabh.

Rajiv hanged himself using his wife’s saree in another room after slitting the throats of his children with a sharp weapon on Wednesday night. All the bodies were recovered on the morning of Thursday.  Police officials arrived at the incident site immediately after receiving the information and probing the matter. The initial probe suggested that the man was mentally ill and had a fight with his wife, Kanti Devi, on Wednesday night, after which his wife left the house.

Police said that Kanti Devi went to her parental home in Kartoli village on Wednesday while Rajiv and the four children were at home.

Rajive’s father, Prithviraj, who lived next door, called his grandson for tea on Thursday morning. After several attempts when he received no answer, Prithviraj sneaked into the home through the Window. The scene inside the home made him scream, leading to neighbours gathering around. Police reached the incident site upon receiving information from the neighbours.
A neighbour said that Rajiv met with an accident a year ago, since then he has remained mentally ill, Times of India reported. “The throats of all four children were slit with a sharp weapon. Inside, Rajiv was hanging from a hook with a sari. Rajiv met with an accident a year ago and since then he used to remain mentally ill because of the injury,” the report quoted unnamed neighbour.
