The Election Commission (EC) on Tuesday announced the date for by-elections in seven Assembly constituencies across the states of Jharkhand, Tripura, Kerala, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The seven state Assembly seats will go to polls on September 5, the EC informed.

The counting of votes will take place on September 8, the poll body added. One of the Assembly constituencies that will elect its new representatives in the upcoming by-polls is Puthuppally. The seat has been lying vacant since the recent demise of former Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy.

Chandy, a veteran Congress leader, had been representing the Puthuppally constituency for five decades, having been elected as MLA in 1970, 1977, 1980, 1982, 1987, 1991, 1996, 2001, 2006, 2011, 2016, and 2021.

By-elections will be held for two seats in Tripura, and one each in Kerala, West Bengal, UP, Jharkhand and Uttarakhand. Besides Kerala's Puthuppally seat, the constituencies which will be electing new MLAs on September 5 are Boxanagar and Dhanpur in Tripura, Dumri in Jharkhand, Dhupguri in West Bengal, Ghosi in Uttar Pradesh, and Bageshwar in Uttarakhand.

Except for Dhanpur and Ghosi, all the other Assembly seats fell vacant after the demise of sitting MLAs.
