Why Is Vande Mataram Suddenly In The Spotlight?

The Vande Mataram is in the spotlight as November 7, 2025, marks the 150th anniversary of India’s National Song Vande Mataram, which translates to ‘Mother, I Bow to Thee.’ The composition has inspired generations of freedom fighters and nation builders, and stands as a testament to India’s national identity and collective spirit.

The song was composed by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee and was first published in the literary journal ‘Bangadarshan’ on November 7, 1875. Later, Bankim Chandra Chatterjee incorporated the hymn in his immortal novel 'Anandamath', which was published in 1882.

Rabindranath Tagore set the song Vande Mataram to music and sang it publicly for the first time at the 1896 Indian National Congress session in Calcutta, a pivotal moment that integrated the song into the burgeoning freedom struggle and established its iconic status as a nationalist anthem. Since then, it has become an integral part of the nation’s civilizational, political, and cultural consciousness. Commemorating this milestone presents an occasion to reaffirm the timeless message of unity, sacrifice, and devotion that Vande Mataram embodies for all Indians.
