LoP and Former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi on Thursday morning left for landslide-hit Wayanad to take stock of the situation after the calamity claimed over 167 lives. Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will also go along with him. The duo was slated to visit Wayanad earlier but couldn’t go due to inclement weather conditions.

The Congress leaders will visit the relief camps opened for the Chooralmala landslide victims at Meppadi and the injured persons admitted in various hospitals.

According to Congress sources, the two leaders are scheduled to visit relief camps at the Government Higher Secondary School and St Joseph UP School in Meppadi. Additionally, they will visit Dr Moopen’s Medical College in Meppadi.

Before their visit, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan held a meeting to review and supervise the ongoing rescue operations in the affected areas of Wayanad.

Notably, Rahul Gandhi won the Lok Sabha election 2024 from the Wayanad seat. However, he retained Rae Bareli seat and his sister and Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi is slated to contest by election from here.

The landslides, which struck various hilly areas near Meppadi in Wayanad district early Tuesday, have left behind massive trails of destruction. Over 1,200 rescue workers from the Indian Army, DSC centre, Territorial Army, NDRF, Indian Navy and the IAF have been deployed to expedite the rescue operation.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has sent a condolence message to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the tragic consequences of the landslides in Kerala.

Turkey's Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed sadness over the loss of more than 150 lives in the landslides and extended its condolences and sympathies to the people of India. Meanwhile, Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu also conveyed his condolences for the victims.
