Flood Alert In North India: Torrential monsoon rains and devastating floods have wreaked havoc across Northern India, severely impacting several regions of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and Uttarakhand.

Over the past few weeks, relentless downpours have triggered landslides, flash floods, and widespread waterlogging claiming numerous lives, displacing thousands, and causing extensive damage to infrastructure, agriculture, and livelihoods.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for heavy rainfall across many districts in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday. River levels in the Yamuna, Sutlej, Ravi, and Beas continue to rise. After Punjab and Haryana, the threat of flooding has now escalated in Delhi. The situation in Punjab remains particularly concerning, with the Bhakra Dam water level reaching 1,677 feet just three feet below the danger mark.

-> Punjab

The situation in Punjab is especially dire, as the water inflow from Himachal Pradesh shows no signs of abating. All 23 districts have been officially declared flood-affected. Ongoing landslides in neighboring hilly regions have blocked numerous roads, including key national highways in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. 

In Punjab, the Government released a comprehensive report detailing the prevailing flood situation, which has caused damage in 23 districts, affecting 1,400 villages and a population of 354,626.

The affected districts include Amritsar, Barnala, Bathinda, Faridkot, Fatehgarh Sahib, Fazilka, Ferozepur, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Ludhiana, Malerkotla, Mansa, Moga, Pathankot, Patiala, Roopnagar, SAS Nagar, Sangrur, SBS Nagar, Sri Muktsar Sahib, and Tarn Taran. Gurdaspur is the worst-hit, with 324 villages affected, followed by Amritsar (135 villages) and Hoshiarpur (119 villages).

The floods have damaged 1,48,590 hectares of crops, severely impacting the state's agricultural sector. Rescue and relief operations are ongoing, with 19,597 people evacuated across the affected areas. Gurdaspur alone has evacuated 5,581 individuals, followed by Ferozepur (3,432) and Amritsar (2,734). A total of 174 relief camps have been set up, with 74 currently active, including 29 in Barnala, 16 in Amritsar, and 14 in Pathankot.

The NDRF has deployed 23 teams across districts, with six teams each in Gurdaspur and Amritsar, and three each in Ferozepur and Fazilka.

The Indian Air Force, Navy, and Army have mobilised 12 columns, with eight on standby and two engineer columns deployed. Additionally, 30-35 helicopters are assisting in rescue and relief efforts. The Border Security Force (BSF) and SDRF are also on the ground, with two SDRF teams in Kapurthala and one BSF team in Gurdaspur. A total of 114 boats and one state helicopter are aiding operations.

-> Haryana

Continuous rainfall was reported in 16 districts on Tuesday. A 30-year-old woman tragically died after a house collapsed in the Narnaund area. In Fatehabad, the Ghaggar River is in spate, submerging 30 villages under water.

Meanwhile, Gurugram recorded 160 mm of rainfall between 8 AM Monday and 8 AM Tuesday, leading to severe waterlogging and traffic disruptions. The Yamuna River in Faridabad is nearing the danger mark, and adjacent farmland has been submerged.

-> Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh has witnessed one of the deadliest monsoons in recent years. Since June 20, the state has recorded 340 deaths 182 from rain-related incidents such as landslides, flash floods, drownings, and house collapses, and 158 from road accidents, according to the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA).

As of Tuesday evening, 1,334 roads (including four national highways) remained blocked across the state. Additionally, 2,180 power distribution transformers (DTRs) were disrupted and 777 water supply schemes were affected, the SDMA reported in its 5 PM update.

The highest number of road closures was reported from Mandi (281), followed by Chamba (239), Shimla (255), and Kullu (204). Power supply disruptions were most significant in Sirmaur (443 DTRs), Kullu (323), and Shimla (302), while major damage to water supply schemes occurred in Shimla (272), Chamba (100), and Kullu (39).

Authorities reported multiple landslides and road cave-ins over the past 48 hours. Debris clearance operations are ongoing, with heavy machinery deployed to restore access on major highways including NH-03, NH-05, NH-305, and NH-707.

-> Jammu & Kashmir

Heavy rainfall continues to batter Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in Udhampur district, where landslides have blocked roads near Thard due to slush and falling boulders. Vehicular movement has been halted between Jakhani and Chenani, hampering restoration efforts on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.

On August 27, the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Yatra was suspended following a deadly landslide that claimed 34 lives. In response, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has ordered the formation of a high-level three-member committee to investigate the incident.

-> Uttarakhand

The India Meteorological Department has issued an alert for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, accompanied by thundershowers and lightning, across several districts over the next 24 hours.

According to the IMD, affected areas may include Dehradun, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar, Haldwani, Rudrapur, Bajpur, Kashipur, Lohaghat, Ramnagar, Khatima, Doiwala, Chakrata, Mussoorie, Raiwala, and surrounding regions. Authorities warn of further disruptions as the state braces for more intense weather conditions.

-> Delhi-NCR

Rain continues to affect Delhi-NCR, with light to moderate showers and thundershowers expected from September 2 to 5, according to the IMD. Maximum temperatures are forecast to remain between 29–34 degrees C, slightly below normal, with southeast winds reaching up to 25 km/h.

In Ghaziabad, all schools remained closed on September 3 due to waterlogging and the impact of heavy rain. Severe traffic congestion was reported on the DND Flyway in Noida.

Earlier today, the IMD issued a red nowcast warning for multiple districts in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab, forecasting rainfall exceeding 15 mm per hour, accompanied by thunderstorms.

-> Rajasthan

Rajasthan continues to face heavy rainfall, which has led to a rise in accidents and infrastructure damage. In Dausa district, the breach of a kachha (earthen) dam in Lalsot submerged several villages. Homes were inundated, and the administration is actively involved in relief efforts.

In Pratapgarh, a teacher fell into the Mahi River, and search operations are ongoing. In Sawai Madhopur, a young man was swept away by floodwaters. According to the Jaipur Meteorological Centre, rainfall is expected to continue across the state for the next four days.
