Weather Today: IMD Issues Heavy Rain, Thunderstorm Alert For 17 States As Monsoon Advances; Check Forecast For Delhi-NCR

Weather Update: The southwest monsoon has advanced across Mumbai and its suburbs, triggering continuous heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours. The intense downpour has led to severe waterlogging on major roads, causing traffic to crawl.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a nationwide weather bulletin, placing 17 states, including Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, under 'orange' and 'yellow' alerts for severe rain and thunderstorms.

Monsoon Batters Mumbai With 300 mm Rain, Brings Relief To Farmers

The southwest monsoon has left India's financial capital inundated, with some parts of the city receiving 300 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours ending at 8 AM. The relentless downpour, which began on Tuesday and intensified on Wednesday, disrupted daily life across Mumbai and its suburbs, flooding low-lying areas and crippling road and rail networks.

The monsoon arrived in Marathwada, a region already suffering from a severe drought, on Tuesday. From the onion hub of Lasalgaon in Nashik to the cotton-producing belts of Buldhana and Jalna, the widespread rain has provided a much-needed relief for local farmers.

Heavy Rain, Thunderstorms To Hit Delhi-NCR, UP

The southwest is advancing rapidly across the national capital and most of the districts of Uttar Pradesh. Delhi-NCR is expected to experience heavy rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds of 40 to 50 km/h over the next 48 hours. Heavy rainfall is also likely across western and eastern Uttar Pradesh.

The IMD has attributed this sudden shift to a combination of pre-monsoon and monsoon winds. The system is expected to bring significant relief for residents enduring intense heat and humidity across North India. However, authorities have urged the public to stay indoors and seek safe shelter due to the possibility of lightning.

IMD Issues Alert For THESE 17 States

The Meteorological Department has issued an alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall across 17 states over the next three to four days.

- North India: Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and eastern Rajasthan.

- West and Central India: Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra (Mumbai and the Konkan region).

- Eastern and Northeastern India: Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Assam and Meghalaya.

Arunachal Pradesh Weather

Incessant rains have wreaked havoc across Arunachal Pradesh's Keyi Panyor district, triggering severe flooding and leaving one dead, four missing, and 17 others injured. The victim has been identified as Nirmala Gupta, a teacher at the Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya. Search operations are underway for the four missing individuals, identified as Alesh Marak, Balari Marak, Tao Anjina, and Saurav Kumar, news agency PTI reported.

The floodwater has heavily inundated low-lying areas, damaging at least 18 houses, while several travellers were stranded after landslides disrupted road connectivity.
