India is currently experiencing a severe heatwave, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert in several districts across the country, warning of high temperatures over the next five days. The meteorological department also advised children and the elderly in these regions to avoid outdoor activities due to the risk posed by the scorching heat.
The heatwave is expected to intensify along the Ganges in West Bengal and multiple districts of Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha. Other affected areas include the Sub-Himalayan regions of West Bengal, Sikkim, East Uttar Pradesh, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, Rayalaseema (southern Andhra Pradesh) and Karnataka, with conditions peaking on April 29 and 30.
The IMD had previously issued a red alert for Odisha and West Bengal, an orange alert for Bihar and Jharkhand and a yellow alert for eastern Uttar Pradesh. In response to the heatwave, Tripura has shut down schools from April 29 to May 1 to protect student health.
