Weather update: The inclement weather continues to persist in North India as dense fog and bitter cold have disrupted life in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, while avalanches in Himachal Pradesh, and heavy snowfall in Uttarakhand have blocked a number of roads.
On Thursday, Delhi woke up to dense fog, significantly reducing visibility and disrupting road, rail, and air traffic. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cold wave warning with minimum temperatures hovering around 8-10 degrees Celsius, while the maximum temperature is likely to reach 17-20 degrees Celsius.
UP weather
A similar dense fog and cold wave condition persists in several districts of Uttar Pradesh, including Lucknow, Noida, and Saharanpur. In western and central Uttar Pradesh, the fog is denser in the mornings and evenings, making the cold even more intense.
Himachal Pradesh weather
Himachal Pradesh, on the other hand, was struck by three avalanches in Bharmour and Pangi in Chamba district. Three shops and two pickup trucks were buried in the avalanche late Wednesday night. No one was inside the shops or vehicles at the time of the accident. A large amount of snow, rocks, and mud has piled up around the shops.
In Sirmaur, a tourist car skidded on sthe now and fell into a field in Haripurdhar. Jagpal, a resident of Panchkula, Haryana, died in the accident.
In another incident, a driver of a Scorpio car was injured after a rock fell on it due to a landslide from a hill on the Chamba-Pathankot National Highway. The vehicle was severely damaged in the accident.
In Manali, police managed to rescue stranded tourist vehicles successfully. Approximately 400 tourist vehicles headed for Solangnala were stranded near the Nag Temple; all vehicles escaped safely.
Uttarakhand weather
Tourists are arriving in large numbers at tourist destinations in Uttarakhand, and the footfall continues to rise in Dhanaulti, Auli, Buranskhanda, Kanatal, and Tehri. Snowfall has disrupted more than two dozen connecting roads in the state.
Kedarnath is covered in three to four feet of snow. ITBP and police personnel deployed to protect the shrine are busy clearing snow from residential buildings. Drinking water and electricity supplies have also been affected in many areas of the state.
Teams from the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and the Public Works Department (PWD) are clearing roads blocked by snow.
According to the weather department, light snowfall and rain are expected in the mountainous regions on Thursday.
Jammu and Kashmir weather
The Jammu-Srinagar highway, which was closed for two days due to heavy snowfall and slippery conditions, was partially reopened on Wednesday, and stranded vehicles were evacuated. Air services from Srinagar International Airport also resumed after weather improvement.
However, a massive landslide near Hasti Bridge in Kishtwar district buried dozens of cattle. A group of shepherds narrowly escaped.

A massive avalanche struck the Sonamarg tourist resort in Kashmir's Ganderbal district around 10:30 pm on Tuesday. No casualty was reported, but snow entered some homes and hotels and damaged several parked vehicles.
Hailstorms across north India
Hailstorms hit isolated places in western Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, and central Maharashtra.
In eastern UP, strong winds, reaching speeds of 30-95 kmph, were observed. Dense to very dense fog prevailed at isolated locations in Punjab, western Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan, with visibility reduced to 50 meters in many areas.
