The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear today pleas filed by the West Bengal government against the Calcutta High Court order cancelling as many as 25,753 appointments in the teaching and non-teaching posts made by the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) in 2016. A bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud is likely to take up the matter today. 

In the previous hearing, the apex court refused to pass any interim direction staying the Calcutta High Court’s April 22 order. The top court also directed that the CBI, which was investigating the matter, not take any precipitative action against the state government officials engaged in approving the creation of super-numeric jobs till the next date of listing.

The court further asked the appellants to show if any secondary evidence was available to separate valid appointments of all 25,753 people empanelled in 2016 for various categories of posts at secondary and higher secondary schools in the state.

The Calcutta High Court ruled that all the 25,753 appointments in 2016 for various categories of posts at the state's secondary and higher secondary schools were unlawful. It further asked the appointees to return the salary drawn with an annualised interest of 12% within the next four weeks. The high court also asked the WBSSC to restart the recruitment process and asked the CBI to continue its investigation into the matter.
