The central government on Saturday nominated four individuals, including eminent lawyer Ujjwal Nikam, for the Rajya Sabha. In a Gazette notification, the Ministry of Home Affairs stated that all the nominated individuals belonged to multiple backgrounds, including diplomacy, the legal fraternity, history, and social work. The notification further informed that four individuals are being nominated to fill the vacancies necessitated by the retirement of the previous nominated members. The President of India has the right to nominate 12 people to the Rajya Sabha from backgrounds such as public service, literature, and art.
Who Is Ujjwal Nikam?
Nikam is a lawyer from Maharashtra who has represented the state government in several high-profile cases in his three-decade-long career. One of his key cases as the Special Public Prosecutor was the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack trial. Nikam had represented the state government against Ajmal Kasab, the terrorist behind the infamous Mumbai attacks.

Apart from this, the celebrated lawyer has represented Maharashtra in several other cases, including the 1991 Bombay bomb blasts case, the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, and the 2003 Gateway of India bombings. Apart from this, Nikam was also part of some other high-profile cases, including the singer Gulshan Kumar murder case and the murder trial of Pramod Mahajan, senior BJP leader, reported News18.
Nikam had also contested the 2024 Lok Sabha election from the Mumbai North Central seat on a BJP ticket; however, he lost the election to his rival Congress candidate. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), wished Nikam a successful career as a parliamentarian.
"Shri Ujjwal Nikam’s devotion to the legal field and to our Constitution is exemplary. He has not only been a successful lawyer but also been at the forefront of seeking justice in important cases. During his entire legal career, he has always worked to strengthen Constitutional values and ensure common citizens are always treated with dignity. It’s gladdening that the President of India has nominated him to the Rajya Sabha. My best wishes for his Parliamentary innings," PM Modi stated in his post.
