Karur Stampede Case: The Supreme Court on Tuesday agreed to take up a plea challenging the Madras High Court's order refusing a CBI probe into the Karur stampede, which claimed 41 lives and left more than 100 injured. The top court will hear the petition on October 10. Actor-turned-politician Vijay's TVK rally witnessed a fatal stampede, creating massive political outrage in Tamil Nadu.

BJP Leader Demands CBI Probe In Stampede
Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai agreed to list the plea filed by BJP leader Uma Anandan for a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), after the matter was mentioned for urgent hearing.

Earlier, on October 3, the Madras High Court had constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under IPS officer Asra Garg to probe the tragic incident, refusing CBI investigation demand. A Bench of Justices M. Dhandapani and M Jothiraman suggested implementing strict Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for political rallies, following the Tamil Nadu government's proposal to frame such guidelines for rallies or meetings, including a ban on events near state or national highways.
The Madras High Court pulled up TVK leaders Vijay and organisers of the rally over their failure to rescue the public and children, and for not taking responsibility for the incident."
Vijay Speaks To Families Of Karur Stampede Victims
Meanwhile, Vijay, in an attempt o reach out to the families of the Karur stampede victims, spoke to the kin of the victims through WhatsApp video calls on October 6. The TVK founder assured them of his support. "He made the call to my son-in-law and expressed his heartfelt condolences. He expressed his regret over the incident and said it should not have happened. Also, he assured the family of his support," a relative of a victim told reporters in Karur.
