Yamuna Floods: The Yamuna River is likely to flood the Faridabad border within 48 hours. The Irrigation Department has released 2.38 lakh cusecs of water from the Hathni Kund Barrage. This water is expected to reach the Okhla Barrage within 72 hours. Before it arrives, officials have decided to release water from the Okhla Barrage towards Faridabad. Currently, the Yamuna is flowing at 199.70 metres near Faridabad, while the danger mark is 202.30 metres.
In Delhi, the Yamuna’s water level crossed the danger mark on Sunday morning. The warning level is 204.50 metres and the danger level is 205.33 metres. According to ANI, evacuation begins once the river reaches 206 metres. Due to continuous heavy rainfall in Delhi over the past few days, the water level has risen above 205.33 metres and continues to increase.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a generally cloudy sky with moderate rain in New Delhi from August 31 to September 2. A “thunderstorm with rain” has been predicted for September 3, followed by “rain or thundershowers” on September 4 and 5.
The Yamuna had caused major flooding in 2023. As a precaution, the administration has begun evacuating residents from flood-prone villages along the Yamuna and is relocating them to relief camps starting today, Jagran.com reported. Officials have warned that flooding is inevitable.
In preparation, the Deputy Commissioner has instructed all officers and employees to remain on high alert. No officer is permitted to leave the headquarters without prior approval, and all leaves have been cancelled. Roads and embankments are being reinforced with soil at multiple locations to mitigate the impact of potential flooding.
