Jharkhand is set to strengthen its healthcare infrastructure as the Union Health Ministry considers approving six new medical colleges in the state. In July, State Minister Sudivya Kumar met Union Health Minister JP Nadda, proposing the upgradation of Sadar (district) hospitals in Dhanbad, Deoghar, Khunti, Giridih, Jamtara, and East Singhbhum into medical colleges under a public-private partnership (PPP) model. He was accompanied by Union Minister for Women and Child Development Annapurna Devi and MP Vijay Hansda.

Union Health Minister JP Nadda has responded, stating that the proposal is under review by the relevant division of the ministry. The state government has also included the plan for these new medical colleges in its 2025-26 budget proposals, seeking central financial support to expand tertiary healthcare services and provide advanced medical facilities to Jharkhand’s citizens.

RIMS-2 Project: A Super-Speciality Medical Hub in Ranchi

Alongside district-level medical colleges, the Jharkhand government is fast-tracking the RIMS-2 project in the state capital, Ranchi. Estimated at Rs 4,000 crore, the project aims to establish a medical college, super-speciality hospital, research centre, and advanced laboratories, providing AIIMS-level facilities.

This dual approach, developing medical colleges in key districts while building high-end medical infrastructure in Ranchi, signals Jharkhand’s move toward self-reliance in healthcare. Minister Sudivya Kumar expressed gratitude to the Union Health Minister for considering the proposal and hoped for continued support from the Centre.
