AQI In Delhi: Delhi, the national capital of Friday, May 16, experienced ‘very poor’ air quality with AQI at 301 at 7 AM, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) website. The air quality in Delhi has seen a drastic degradation of the air quality as compared to Thursday, which was recorded at 237 at 7 AM. However, the AQI remained within the moderate category for seven days. Many areas of Delhi-NCR witnessed a real-time AQI reading that crossed the 500 mark, entering the “hazardous” zone. This drastic change in air quality can trigger serious health problems, especially in children and elderly and those with respiratory conditions. However, by following certain tips, people can stay safe and protect themselves.
Prolonged exposure to the very poor air quality in Delhi can lead to a range of health issues like irritation in the eyes and serious complications like asthma attacks, bronchitis and even long-term cardiovascular damage. Although government officials are taking measures to curb the pollution levels, it is important for every individual to take steps on their own to stay safe and protected. Here are the five tips to stay safe and protect yourself from the poor AQI in Delhi.
Safety Steps To Follow Amid Poor AQI In Delhi
Avoid Outdoor Activities
After the air quality dips to the ‘very poor’ category, outdoor activities like walking, jogging or exercising can do more harm than good. These can further alleviate symptoms such as coughing, wheezing or shortness of breath.
Wear An N95 Mask
Not all masks give protection against air pollution. Cloth and surgical masks almost fail to filter out fine particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), which are the most harmful components of smog. Thus, it is always better to use certified N95 or N99 masks that are designed to filter out at least 95 percent of airborne particles.
Stay Hydrated
Polluted air can dry out the mucous membranes in the nose, throat and lungs, making people more vulnerable to irritation and infections. Drinking plenty of water helps keep the body hydrated and flushes out the toxins.

Use Saline Nasal Spray
Saline nasal sprays can be a gentle and effective way to clear out the pollutants, allergens and irritants from the nasal passages. Using saline nasal sprays can relieve congestion, reduce inflammation and soothe dry or itchy nasal tissues. This is particularly helpful for children and those suffering from allergic rhinitis or sinus problems during high-pollution days.
Take Steam
Inhaling steam can provide immediate relief from the respiratory discomfort caused by poor air quality. Steam helps in loosening mucus, soothing irritated nasal passages and opening up the airways. This is beneficial for people who are experiencing congestion dry throat or a burning sensation in the nose and eyes.
Seek Medical Help If Symptom Persists
If symptoms like prolonged coughing, chest tightness, wheezing, fatigue or breathlessness are being experienced by you or any of your family members, seek immediate medical help. These could be signs of respiratory distress or worsening asthma.
