What Is Ventricular Septal Defect?
Dr Amit Misri, Associate Director, Paediatric Cardiology, Heart Institute, Medanta, Gurugram exclusively explained about this uncommon heart condition named Ventricular Septal Defect. He explains that this condition falls under the category of congenital heart defects. These defects are present from birth and occur due to developmental malformation during foetal life. They can appear in various forms, such as a hole in the heart or deformities affecting the heart valves or great arteries or the absence of one pumping chamber.
Causes Of Ventricular Septal Defect
This condition occurs as the baby's heart is developing during pregnancy. The muscular wall separating the heart into left and right sides doesn't form fully, leaving one or more holes. The size of the hole or holes can vary.
How Common Is Ventricular Septal Defect?
According to Dr Misri, around 60% of congenital heart diseases involve a ventricular septal defect either in isolation or in association with other heart defects. Among every 1,000 births, approximately 8 to 10 babies have congenital heart disease, with five to six of them having a ventricular septal defect.
What Are Symptoms Of Ventricular Septal Defect?
The common symptoms of this heart condition include poor eating, fast breathing or breathlessness, easy tiring, whooshing sound when listening to the heart with a stethoscope (heart murmur) and shortness of breath, especially when exercising.
Treatment
Dr Misri explains that for the treatment of this condition, some babies might need surgery within days of birth, while others can delay surgery if they're asymptomatic. Surgery time can vary depending on the risk-benefit ratio at a particular age.
Preventive Measures
It is important to keep in mind some preventive measures to help your child be safe and sound from this heart condition. Dr Misri suggests that while there isn't any concrete list of preventive steps that can completely exclude the risk of this condition, there are steps that can be taken to reduce the likelihood. Prospective mothers can start using folic acid tablets beginning two to three months before conception. This practice not only serves as a preventative measure against the onset of congenital heart disease but also prevents the occurrence of other neurological symptoms.
