Cons Of Too Much Fibre: An ideal healthy diet is incomplete without the inclusion of fibre-rich foods in it. Fibre is one of the most important nutrients that has an abundance of benefits for the body. Health experts suggest eating more fibre regularly to maintain a healthy body, but how much is safe? We all have heard the saying ‘too much of everything is bad’, same applies to our eating patterns. Even the healthiest foods consumed in excess quantities can have negative effects on our health and body.
In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr Dilip Gude, Senior Consultant Physician, Yashoda Hospitals Hyderabad explained how too much fibre can be a detrimental factor for the digestive system and overall health.

According to Dr Gude, adding fibre is known to improve constipation. It also improves blood sugar levels, maintains sugar levels better, regulates gut health etc. But having fibre in excess of 70g per day is known to have issues like bloating, constipation, nausea, diarrhoea, gassy feeling etc and rarely intestinal blockage, or cramps.

Dr Gude explained that there are 2 types of fibre namely soluble and insoluble fibre. The former dissolves in water fully draws in fluids from the intestinal wall and helps move the bowels. The insoluble fibre adds bulk to stool and may relieve constipation. But too much of both types is known to worsen constipation. Weight gain and weight loss are possible with too much fibre in the diet. Natural dietary fibre in the form of raw veggies, nuts and seeds, whole grains, legumes etc may be a better alternative than artificial fibres. Too much fibre is also known to hamper the body's ability to absorb nutrients, vitamins and minerals.

He further mentioned that Aerophagia and bloating can be caused by using lots of chewing gum etc. Increased fluid intake and exercise can offset the side effects of excess fibre. Some people may have excess fibre side effects at just over 40g per day. It is always important to balance the right amount of fibre in the diet.
