Payal Kapadia At Cannes: Payal Kapadia, the Indian filmmaker, has returned to the 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival as a jury member with an understated yet powerful style statement. She graced the opening ceremony by walking the red carpet in not the usual glamour but exuded a boss lady look in a sharply tailored deconstructed plaid suit by Rishta designer, Arjun Saluja. Her ensemble reflected the thought behind intellect meeting intention. Payal Kapadia was styled by her long-time friend, costume designer and fashion stylist Indrakshi Pattanaik. Payal Kapadia got recognition for her film ‘All We Imagine As Light’ last year.

Payal Kapadia’s Deconstructed Suit Decoded

Payal Kapadia’s look was inspired by the 1980s power dressing but reflected a subtle contemporary edge. Indrakshi shared that Payal has always been fond of the aesthetics of the 80s-structured, smart and full of presence dressing sense. She and Arjun Saluja made the deconstructed plaid suit, keeping in mind the filmmaker’s intelligent, grounded and expressive nature.

The suit is in muted grey tones that balance authority with ease. The clean lines, asymmetric tailoring and a relaxed silhouette ensured comfort and character. This suit mirrored an important consideration of Kapadia, who prefers to watch the screening without the distraction of fussy fashion. The outfit also aligned with the Cannes dress code for this year, which encouraged no nudity and voluminous outfits.

Payal Kapadia’s Accessories For The Deconstructed Plaid Suit

Kapadia paired her authentic plaid suit with statement silver jewellery from Tribe by Amrapali. Her layered pendent necklace was influenced from West African Akan traditions and an oxidised choker with ghungroo detailing added a substantial richness to the look. The accessories gave a reflection of worldliness and rootedness just like Kapadia herself.
